In 1973 one Orion was lost to a mid-air collision with a NASA Convair 990 over the Sunnyvale Golf course. I had just cleared the clubhouse about 1/2 mile away when we heard them collide. A sad day (one P3 crewman survived). <br /><br />FWIW... The predecessor to the P3 was Lockheed's twin engined P2-V Neptune. We'd see these on rare occasion flying out of Moffett - training missions I think. US2A w...VP93 flew out of NAF Detroit not Glenview. US2A was a transport for Stations and Carriers. Not an ASW bird. ASW birds were S2F, and S2E this one although an US2A is Painted in VS73 'colors'.
